Glossary:
SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) - the standard for managing voice, data and multimedia connections via the Internet, used in conjunction with VoIP for voice calls.
VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) - the standard for delivering voice calls over the Internet (instead of PSTN lines). VoIP is becoming extremely popular as there are no call charges.
ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) - a digital dial-up service introduced in the late 1980s, providing both data and voice call capabilities.
Analogue PSTN (Analogue Public Switched Telephone Network) - the standard dial-up telephone line most of us have installed at home. PSTN is suitable for fax machines, alarm systems and disaster recovery.
